Free Association Membership for Assistant Referees
Sydney West RRA offers free associate membership to accredited assistant referees. Some of the many benefits are outlined below:
Background
In recent years many people and organisations have been working to improve relationships across the Rugby community. In that regard Sydney West RRA greatly appreciates the support we receive from clubs, schools and competition organisers in the area we serve.
In broad terms our region includes suburbs and venues within the catchment areas of the Eastwood, Parramatta, Penrith and West Harbour Premiership Rugby clubs. Geographically, that’s a pretty big slice of metropolitan Sydney!
With a view to further strengthening our relationship with players and their clubs, Sydney West RRA invites accredited assistant referees from senior and junior clubs across our region to register with us as associate members free of charge. Some of the benefits flowing from this approach are outlined below.

Benefits for Assistant Referees
Rugby referees have long recognised that matches are easier to control and result in a more enjoyable game day experience for everyone, when trained and accredited assistant referees are present and involved. Assistant referees play a valuable and increasingly important role in the modern game.
Sydney West RRA is confident that including assistant referees in association activities will enhance even further the relationship that exists between referees and assistant referees. Undertaking educational and training activities together and socialising more closely will enable each group within the match official family to develop a more informed understanding of the role played by the other.
Membership of the association will also allow assistant referees to keep up to date with changes in Law or law interpretation that sometimes occur during the season. In particular, to changes relating to foul play, touch and in-goal, all of which are important game day elements for match officials, irrespective of the role they perform within the playing enclosure.
The association welcomes all accredited assistant referees as members. We encourage you to join and participate with other Sydney West members in our monthly education nights and a number of other training and development and social activities we hold throughout the year.
It should be clearly understood that the association does not appoint club-based assistant referees to matches, nor does it seek to. Assistant referees remain attached to their local team or club. The matches in which our associate members choose to be involved remains — as it always has been — a matter between that assistant referee and his or her local club.
We see this initiative benefiting the game in a number of ways. It is a concept we are keen to develop in conjunction with the clubs and other interested parties.

Benefits for players
The players will undoubtedly benefit because matches will be controlled in future by better trained, better developed and better informed match officials — both referees and assistant referees. Better trained match officials, better game!
Benefits for the game
We are hopeful that having observed the enjoyment and camaraderie that comes from refereeing, some of our assistant referee members will, in time, take the next step and seek full referee accreditation. The path from assistant referee to fully accredited referee is one that many Sydney West members have followed over the years.
It is hoped that all clubs, senior and junior, will see merit in this initiative and support it. As mentioned earlier, associate membership of Sydney West RRA does not alter the relationship between assistant referees and their clubs in any way. The strong connection between an assistant referee and his or her club continues unchanged and unabated.
As mentioned above, associate membership of Sydney West RRA is offered to accredited assistant referees free of charge.
Sydney West RRA members look forward to having as many club-based assistant referees as possible registering with us and participating in association activities. We hope you will agree that the potential benefits for all match day participants and for the game itself, are considerable.
